The Honda dealership had installed an a/t oil jet kit around that time because of a safety recall, but the transmission slipping was unaffected by that remedy. The transmission of our 2002 Honda Odyssey started slipping when shifting from 2nd into 3rd gear around 40,000-50,000 miles. There are accidents waiting to happen, because the cars behind the van will expect it to accelerate, and it will get caught in the middle of intersections. People may try to drive slowly anyway, because they cannot afford to replace the transmission. No one expects this out of a six to seven year old car with 83,000 miles anymore. I hope that Honda is required to fix or replace the transmission. What if it slips out of gear, and I get stuck in a lane of oncoming traffic? Taking a left from a busy highway, such as the one I live near, is dangerous, because I don't know what the van will accelerate like. I can't pull into and out of intersections predictably. The car has had average maintenance by the dealership. I hope it is only a part, and that I don't have to replace the whole transmission I can't afford it. I am dropping it off tonight or early tomorrow morning. From what I have read, the dealership will charge thousands of dollars to replace it. When one would normally expect it to go to third gear, it slips. 2nd and 3rd gears, mainly over 25 miles per hours, do not work predictably. The transmission on my 2003 Odyssey just failed at 83,000 miles. Please make Honda accountable for these defects and make them do something to make these vehicles safer. That was a huge, expensive mistake! with all of the reports of second and third transmissions failing on these vehicles, I will never feel safe in it again with my family! we plan to sell it, if we are able. Does someone have to die before Honda does something to protect owners from this sudden, dangerous failure of the transmissions? we bought a Honda because of its safety rating.

Now, we are aware of how well known and documented this transmission issue is on the Odyssey. Honda offered us $450 on the $3,300 repair. From the thousands of other stories I have read online, many others weren't so fortunate. We are so thankful it didn't happen on the highway. In fact, our bags were packed and we were planning to leave right after school that day for a 300 mile trip to grandparents. (we had had it properly serviced according to the recommendations - Aug 2010 tranny fluid changed). Prior to this day, there was absolutely no warning that there was a transmission problem. After dropping the girls off at school, there were a couple of other instances where it shifted out of gear on the 2 mile drive to the transmission shop. If was as if it shifted out of gear, into neutral. I was driving my young children to school, when in the middle of a busy intersection, my 2002 Honda Odyssey (89,000 mi) lost power. I only assuming that a robot was inadvertently overfilling the fluid on a bunch of transmissions along the way. This was obviously an issue during assembly and I am sure I am not the only one that may have been affected.

Dealer removed excess fluid and appears to be operating fine (although I now question the longevity of the transmission after this incident). If this would have happened on the highway or otherwise it could have been worse or caused an accident. Apparently a half quart makes a big difference in the internal pressure of the transmission which caused this issue. The selling dealer did not cover/discover this overfill as part of the vehicle sell checklist process (if I were them, not sure I would have noticed a half-quart either). This was an issue from the factory and manufacturing process. Dealer replicated event and determined transmission fluid was overfilled (approx half a quart). Immediately limped vehicle to closest dealer. ) it was very abrupt, and made a loud clunk noise - it was so hard it felt like the powertrain was going to be ripped off the engine mounts and out of the engine compartment (seriously). From there vehicle was only using 2 gears (~2nd and 5th) and every time it up shifted into 5th (from a stoplight, etc. Driving approx 25mph through town when engine rpms increased a bit as it briefly slipped out of gear, then it caught itself and abruptly went into approx 5th gear (6 speed transmission).
